BP Oil Spill One Year Ago- Happy Earth Week- Where is the Gulf?

Gulf of Mexico Dead Zone

Today a year ago the BP Deep Water Well blew up in the Gulf of Mexico and spewed out millions of gallons of oil until mid-July when they finally capped the well. It is fitting that CNN looked back on the Gulf last night with many of the same players in the Louisiana parishes who have fought BP then and now.  Where is the Gulf in this year of recovery?

Many experts say it isn’t as bad as it could have been and much of the oil has gone, but many of the locals say that isn’t true, because oil is still washing up in the marshes and coating the grasses and the Pelicans are getting it on their breasts and dying.  So is BP still in the Gulf?  Not where you can see them?  They are not present cleaning up the marshes and making sure that the oil is being cleaned up where the locals are seeing it.

Where is President Obama in this crisis? Vacant according to the local people, they don’t think the President pressured BP to do enough.  It was clear during the crisis that no one knew who was in charge? BP or the Government?  That seems to still be the problem today.

Many places in the Gulf are still not recovered according to the local fishermen.  They do not fish in many of the places they used to go. Yet BP still wants to drill in the Arctic and pollute more waters that feed the world.  They had a deal with Russia that fell apart, and let’s hope that no one will do another deal with BP because they do not seem to know how to plan for disasters or to clean up the ones that they create when one does happen.

Much of the money pledged to the people in the Gulf according to CNN is arriving too little, and too late for many of the people there.  BP doesn’t want to release the money until stringent guidelines are met.  Many say the guidelines are unrealistic.  Perhaps BP should walk a mile in the shoes of the people in the Gulf so they can have their lives back before BP took it away a year ago today!  Reuse, Renew and Recycle, Happy Earth Week!
